The cambelt, also known as the timing belt, is crucial for your car's engine. It synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring that the engine’s valves open and close at the correct times during each cylinder’s intake and exhaust strokes.

Made of rubber with internal teeth, the cambelt meshes with the crankshaft and camshaft gears. Regular replacement is necessary to avoid breakage, which can severely damage the engine.

The main function of the cam belt is to control the timing of the engine's internal combustion processes, making sure the crankshaft and camshaft rotate in sync. If the timing is off, it can cause significant damage to the engine's valves, pistons, or other parts.

The clutch is a vital component in vehicles, linking the
engine to the transmission. It enables smooth gear changes, controlled
acceleration, and effective manoeuvring. A properly functioning clutch is
essential for driving.

How does a clutch work?

Pressing the clutch pedal disconnects the engine from the
wheels, allowing for gear changes. Releasing the pedal reconnects them.
Friction between the clutch plate and flywheel ensures smooth transitions.
Frequent use during city driving causes wear, making regular maintenance
crucial.

Signs of a failing clutch

Address these signs promptly to avoid performance issues and
safety risks.

Time required

Clutch replacements take 5-8 hours, depending on car make
and model. Tyremen ensures a smooth process with timely updates.

Clutch lifespan

Typically lasts between 50,000-100,000 miles, depending on
driving style. Gentle driving extends lifespan, while stop-start conditions
accelerate wear. Regular checks help catch issues early.

Tips for extending clutch lifespan

Proper care saves money and hassle in the long run.

The DVSA “Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency” requires most vehicles over 3 years old to have an annual MOT. The MOT ensures that at the time the MOT has been carried out the vehicle is fit for purpose. If any faults are found that result in a failure this will need to be fixed before the MOT can be passed.
Tyremen offers Class 4 and Class 7 MOTs.

Class 4 MOT is suitable for cars, small vans & motorhomes up to 3000kgs.
Class 7 MOT is for commercial vehicles weighing between 3000kgs and 3500kgs gross weight.

Keeping up with your vehicle's service schedule is particularly important to ensure your vehicle runs as it should, and not to mention a car or van with a full-service history is worth more than one without.

It's three options for servicing which include different checks.

Interim service is designed to be carried out every 6 months or every 6000 miles as a top-up service. It will check your fluid levels, brakes, cambelt condition etc.
Full Service should be done once a year or around every 12 000 miles. It will cover everything an interim service does, but also oil, oil filter and air filter change as well as a more in-depth check of the vehicle.
Major Service is normally done every 2 years or 24 000 miles and will cover everything a full service does as well as a full health check and replacement of wearable parts.

Wheel alignment or tracking is often something people overlook as a non-essential part of maintenance, but is especially important if you wish to get your money's worth from your tyres. Tyremen has the most up-to-date wheel alignment equipment which allows us to perform 2-way and 4-way alignment.

The big tell-tale sign of misaligned wheels is uneven tread wear. By looking at your tyre you can see that it's wearing more on one side than the other. If any part of the steering system has been replaced or adjusted it's important that you have your wheel alignment redone.

Suspension is a very important factor on any motor vehicle on the road. Its main purpose is to maintain maximum friction between your tyres and the road. This provides stability and a good positive feel to the steering making you feel more in control and ensuring comfort (well, in some cars that is).

If roads were built 100% flat then suspension would not be as important, but we all know they're not. With the ever-increasing amount of potholes and uneven road surfaces, we need good healthy suspension to keep us on the road and prevent us and the car from being shaken to pieces.

Common signs of suspension failure:

• Has your vehicle dropped in one corner? Indication of a broken spring. Needs attention.

• You can suddenly feel every hump and bump. Indication of worn suspension. Needs attention.

• More body roll when going around corners than normal. Needs attention.

• Vehicle pulling to one side may indicate suspension problems, but this could be as simple as misaligned wheels. Needs attention.

• Fluid seen around suspension parts, a good indication of suspension failure. Needs attention.

Remember, when having any type of work on your suspension done, it is very important you have a wheel alignment done too.

One of the most important parts of your vehicle is your brakes. After all, they are supposed to stop you.

Servicing your front and rear brakes can save you a lot of money down the line. One of the biggest mistake people can make is running their brake pads down to where there is no braking material left. This will result in damage to the brake discs which could have been avoided by changing the pads earlier.

Signs of problems:

• Loud squeal when pressing the brake pedal.

• Vibration through the steering wheel when pressing the brake pedal.

• Burning smell.

• One of your wheels is covered in brake dust more than the others.

Modern cars are filled with electronics and packed with sensors to monitor both how your vehicle is behaving and to make your motoring life easier.

When something goes wrong, it can be a difficult task trying to work out exactly what that warning light flashing away on your dashboard is trying to tell you.

It’s important to know what the warning lights on your dashboard actually mean. Not least because they can pre-empt a car breakdown or full-on failure, potentially saving you from an expensive repair bill and meaning you stay safer on the road.

Many lights can just be caused by relaxing the way you care for your car or van. For example, the tyre pressure or oil light could just be a simple top-up of air or oil. A brake light generally means your brake pads are nearing the end of their service. Engine management light can be very simple however, this could also be a very urgent matter which needs attending to asap.

If you have any questions or need a diagnostic test on your vehicle, even if it's just for peace of mind, don't hesitate to get in touch.
